Research

    Overview of research:
It has been reported that apoptosis of vertebral disc cells occurs in the degenerative intervertebral disc. However, its molecular mechanism remains to be defined. The gene expression of Bax and Bcl-2 was analyzed in degenerative intervertebral disc. As a result, mechanical stress of the disc induces apoptosis through a Bax, reducing the number of cells and the synthesis of extracelular matrix proteins and resulting in the degeneration of the disc. On the other hand, a feedback mechanism appears to be activated by an increase of Bcl-2 gene expression to repress apoptosis induction.
